Week of 10-21-18

NATE GOING BACK
It was really hard to have Nate go back to work, Sunday.  I missed him!!  10-21-18

PRIMARY PRACTICE #2
I just wish I had a job.  I mostly float around trying to find things to do.  How did I get put with Natalie and Barbara when I am the complete opposite!!  I wish I was more like them so that I didn't feel so useless.  I can't wait for the program to be over!  10-21-18

SAINTS VOLUME 1
The kids and I started reading the Saints book on Sunday evenings (and listening to it in the car on long drives).  It's been so neat!  I love all the detail and things I've not heard before!  It feels like The Church is trying to be more transparent.  It's easy to see that Joseph Smith was not perfect and that he did make some mistakes while restoring the true Church.  I am so grateful for his sacrifices though and all that he did to make it happen.  I am grateful that we don't have to be perfect yet.  That Heavenly Father gives us chance after chance to prove ourselves and work toward perfection.  I love the Gospel.  I'm so happy I get to share it with my kids.  This is the first book we've read in a long time together, so that makes me happy too.  10-21-18

MUSIC MAKERS
Molly sure is a fan of Music Makers- she is getting braver every week.  I'm so glad we have that for her.  She needs something of her own to look forward to every week.  I only wish things could be more orderly and that the kids there were a little more controlled.  It was super chaotic this time- didn't seem to phase Molly too much except when she got punched.  Good experience for her though :).  Something her little highness's self hasn't experienced much of.  10-22-18

GETTING READY FOR HALLOWEEN

Molly and I went shopping for some of the things we needed for costumes!  Finally!  It feels like October just flew by!!  Like faster than normal!  We finally got our webs up and even carved our pumpkins!  It's beginning to look a lot like Halloween!  10-22-18

BEAUTIFUL RAINBOW

The kids got up early to go to the temple and I was able to get up slowly and still read my scriptures and get everything else done.  It was a nice morning.  The kids got home just before Brad and Luke needed to go, so we rushed out a little, getting them off, and on the way to the car I noticed this big, beautiful, BRIGHT rainbow!!  It was SO PRETTY!!  And you could see almost the whole thing!  I had a hard time getting a picture of it in the driveway, so we left, but then as we were driving the frontage road, I just had to pull over and get the shot of the whole thing we could see to the west!  It was SO AMAZING!!  I haven't seen anything like it in a long time!  Then I grabbed another shot on my way out of the school drop off.  SO pretty!

PRIMARY VIDEO

I finally took some time to work on the Primary video- spent the ENTIRE DAY doing it!  (well, after reading in Erika's class and getting my hair trimmed)  I like it for the most part, but I'm not as excited about it as I was last year's.  Kinda boring unfortunately.  But whatever.  You get what you get and you don't throw a fit.  10-23-18

KELLY'S LAST GAMES- TWO BIG WINS!

Kelly's last games were up in Weber at the fairgrounds.  Took some finagling to get Erika back to Race Cats (she wanted to change out of her pants) and Charity to work, before getting up there, but Kelly and I made it with a few seconds to spare.  I watched most of them by myself, but Nate and the other kids showed up for the middle.  Kelly was amazing!  She made two goals (missed a third shot), but how cool is that!!  I was SO PROUD of her!  It was a really fun way to end the season- winning the first one in sudden death, and then the second one as well.  Very cool!  We hurried back to make it to the Pumpkin Patch with everyone.  10-23-18

PUMPKIN PATCH WITH THE PATANES AND MAUGHANS

This year was a sad attempt at what we did last year.  We had planned on doing it the night before, but with rain, it just didn't pan out.  Then tonight was just so full and busy, it ended up not being the best night for it either.  We went though, and while we were there, had a great time!  We just weren't there very long.  We talked while the kids ran through the little maze- funny how something like that can keep their attention.  Then we picked out pumpkins.  We had done our pumpkins the night before, so we just got one to leave on Heidi's doorstep along with her birthday gift.  It was a fun night.  No Fiiz, and no lingering longer than we should... we had to get out of there to get Heidi her gift, pick up Charity and get Nate off for the mid.  So that was a bit of a bummer... better luck next year!  10-23-18

HEIDI'S BIRTHDAY

We were invited to a party Wednesday for Heidi's birthday, but it's during Charity's choir concert, so we won't be going, but I wanted her to know we were thinking about her.  So we got some candy and a pumpkin at the patch to leave on her doorstep as a little surprise.  I hope she likes them.  10-23-18

CHARITY'S CHOIR CONCERT
We went to Charity's concert this week!  That was a really fun concert!  I wish my kids didn't have to be in the last choir performing, but Charity's songs were well worth the wait.  I LOVED the african-ish one.  They had the bongo drum and everything, complete with kids standing up in the back in the balcony singing.  Very cool!  I really loved watching my Charity sing.  She has such a love of singing and it's just so fun to watch her performing and in her element.  It was fun to have Grandpa Hatch there, supporting her, and even though I would have loved to not have to go get a drink or use the bathroom in between EVERY SINGLE SONG, I was loving that all the kids were there to support her as well.  Great Job Charity!!  10-24-18

DUMB OVERTIME
Well, Nate got scheduled for one of the worst possible shifts this week.  2-10 on Thursday.  Not cool.  We had community council meeting for me, along with Kelly's practice at 4:00, then on to the Race Cats race with everyone except Brad and Luke who had to get themselves to Flag Football, at 5:00.  Grandpa Hatch made a guest appearance at the races, so that was fun!  But I could have done without Molly's mood the whole time.  Once we got done there, we dropped everyone off at home, I got dressed for my Primary Leadership meeting, and then dropped Noah off at scouts on my way there.  It was a full evening.  I don't love these kinds of days, but I like them even less when Nate is unavailable.  We survived though.  I think we'll live to see the next one.  10-25-18

RACE CATS RACE #2
Erika and Noah ran their second big race today!  This one had Weber School District involved besides Davis.  It was a little bigger and a little more competitive!  Noah and Erika did great!  I don't think either of them beat their last time, but they both felt pretty good about it.  Course Noah developed a pretty painful "cramp" a few minutes after it was over.  He wasn't too happy about that.  It was fun to have Grandpa Hatch there and even though Molly was a pill, we had a good time cheering our racers on!  Fun stuff.  10-25-18

SO PEACEFUL

I go and read with Jack and his reading group on Fridays.  Whenever I get to his classroom, all of the kids are sitting quietly working on their worksheet, the room smells amazing (Mrs. Burns uses an air freshener when she's in the room even though it's against fire code :)), and she is playing some relaxing music.  It is SO PEACEFUL!!  I just love how it feels!  I am so glad that Jack gets to be in that kind of environment.  10-26-18

FRAMED

Nate spent a lot of Friday finishing up the framing on the basketball court!  We're all getting very anxious and excited to have it done!  It looks so good right now with the gravel and frame- looks like it's actually going to happen! 10-26-18

FIRST MAN

Nate and I got to go out on Friday night.  We went to the movie First Man.  I really liked it.  It was an interesting perspective of Neil Armstrong.  Made me think about how my attitude about things changes them.  How I cope with things can effect how I grow from them.  I mean, I think he had some pretty messed up trials and with all of his friends dying all the time- that would be so hard!  I wonder if it was his trials and how he handled them (or rather DIDN'T) that made him so good at his job? Or if he could have enjoyed the whole experience more if he had been able to cope better with his trials.  Just interesting to think about.  It was a nice time out with Nate too!  10-26-18

MAYAN MIRACLE 5K

We had another great run at the Mayan Miracle Foundation 5K on Saturday!  I really love that we do this now!  Fun tradition!  We got there with a few minutes to spare and get all hyped up :).  It was just Brad, Luke, Noah and Erika with Nate and I this year.  Which is fun, but we are hoping to get Charity and Kelly involved next year :).  Everyone was pretty excited and we were all ready to do our best!  I told Nate not to hang back with me this year- I wanted him to be able to do his best, he had been training so much the past month.  He did SO GOOD!  I can't believe he was up there with the kids and actually beat Erika!  That's saying A LOT because Erika is pretty amazing!  She may have LET him pass her up, not sure.  He says he was trying to catch up with her the whole time :).  So Nate did awesome and came in at 27 minutes and some seconds.  How cool is that!!  20 minutes faster than last year (since I wasn't weighing him down).  Pretty awesome.  He wasn't even all that tired at the end either.  I was so proud of him! 

I was pretty proud of myself too!  I was able to run all but 300 steps that I took in 100 step increments when I was losing momentum.  So that was pretty awesome!  I cut 10 minutes off my time from last year, coming in around 37 minutes.  I know it's not real great, but it was better!  Next year I hope to do even better!

Bradley did really well this year and enjoyed running it with soles on his shoes :).  He and Rachel got to run together for a lot of it- so that was fun!  I guess when they got through the finish line they just crashed on the grass.  I don't know his time.  

Luke did a great job as well.  He had been experiencing some annoying things with his leg and stuff, but he made really good time.  I don't know what it was, but it was way before me :).  I think he was a little disappointed when he learned that the age divisions were different than they had seen on the trophies before the race.  He was at the younger end of the division instead of the older.  He was fine with it though- he just likes to run.  

Noah was able to stay with Josh the entire run!  That is pretty dang cool considering how well Josh has been doing in Race Cats this year.  They both came in just before Nate at 26 minutes.  Pretty sweet!  Noah got 1st place in his age division.  

Erika did amazing as well!  All that training and conditioning has really paid off for these two.  She was able to come in at 28 minutes and won 1st place in her division!!  She didn't want to compete with Kate, but I think it was fun for her to get a turn at first place.  She beat Kate by six seconds.  I'm guessing it was the six seconds between when Kate passed the start line and when Erika did.  Kinda crazy how that works- you can cross the finish line at the same time, but not get the same score.  But anyway- we were SO PROUD OF HER!!

So proud of everyone!  I love that we have made this a tradition.  It's fun to be with the Maughans, it's fun to be out in the fresh (and sometimes smokey) air.  I really love the examples my kids have set for me!  

Nate and I tried the burritos keto style this year and it was SO GOOD!  I loved the mushrooms and peppers!  So yummy!  

We were a little bummed we didn't win anything in the raffle, but whatever.  Still a fun time.  Thanks to Charity for babysitting Jack and Molly!!  

NO CONCRETE

We were supposed to lay concrete on Saturday, but our guy had to reschedule for Monday.  Such a bummer.  Nate was able to frame the small pad for his smokers though.  We really are getting anxious though with the weather getting colder!  I hope we can get it done soon!  10-27-18

MAUGHAN'S HAUNTED FOREST

We were SO THRILLED when we found out the Maughans were going to do their Haunted Forest again!  We missed it last year!  They had some really cool stuff this year- I had to get some pictures.  I know they don't do it all justice, I just wanted to remember it all.  This projected skull picture was Molly's favorite!  She actually really loved the woods too, reminding me that it all wasn't real several times.  She made Luke and Erika take her through it over and over again.  So cute!  

Jack and I spent a lot of time roasting marshmallows and talking with neighbors.  It was a nice relaxing evening.  Everyone else seemed to be having a good time as well. Fun time!

Week of 10-14-18

PRIMARY PROGRAM PRACTICE
Well, we survived the first practice... barely!  I was trying to be helpful and not get in the way at the same time... not my forte.  We'll see how the next one goes.  The kids did great though!  Even Jack had his part memorized!  10-14-18

BRADLEY'S ORDINATION TO THE OFFICE OF TEACHER
I wish I hadn't been so frazzled just before.  With the Primary practice and all.  But it was nice to sit down in the Bishop's office and witness Brad being ordained.  By his dad this time :).  I love hearing the things that Heavenly Father wants to bless my kids with and being in tune to them that way.  It was a nice feeling in the room.  Congratulations to my big boy!  He's going to do big things, that kid- I just know it!  10-14-18

FAMILY MEETING
Nate had taken Sunday off along with the rest of the week, so we all got to go to the family meeting!  We were all very excited to be going.  I loved talking with Ali and our idea to set up Austin and Abbi Gadd. It was fun to watch the kids making Molly feel like a queen!  10-14-18

MUSIC MAKERS
Karen wasn't there this week so she asked me to fill in for her- I had to do the finger plays.  It went okay.  Molly is still wishing we were doing the animal songs from last month.  Kind of a bummer for her.  10-15-18

PUMPKIN SEEDS
My good, Keto friend, Barbara, left me a surprise on the porch, some pink salt (because she knew I hadn't gotten anymore yet) and some pumpkin seeds, separated into 1/4 cup servings!  How thoughtful is she!!  I loved the surprise and felt so loved.

FHE
Erika taught a nice lesson that she found on lds.org.  She did an object lesson with a box and a shoe inside, you had to reach in and grab the shoe and try to get your hand out.  Then she showed the video of how this worked with the monkeys.  She talked about avoiding temptation and sin.  She did a really good job!  I was super impressed!  I love that my kids magnify their call to teach lessons in our home!  We played hide and seek for the activity.  10-15-18

PAINTING THE GIRLS' ROOM
Kelly and I had the three walls and beds done in time for produce clean up Monday night!  I was so happy we had that deadline.  Charity helped paint the beds also.  They turned out SO CUTE!!  And fit so nicely and look so good in their room!  We still need to paint the one wall with the closet and a small section on the south wall, but so fun!  I'm so glad we are making it more comfortable in there.  If only I could get them to keep it cleaned up.  10-15-18

NATE'S WEEK OFF
Nate had the whole week off- we're still not really sure why we did that- other than for Fall Break.  But it was REALLY nice to have him home!  Plus, he was able to really go to town on the backyard and get a LOT of work done for the basketball court!  He worked on that non-stop really.  When we weren't sitting around gabbing.  We did do a lot of that.  Although, I did kind of have to keep up my regular routine with music makers, produce and helping at the school and such.  But even Nate felt like it was a nice break.  I loved it.  10-15-18

TEMPLE
Nate and I got to take advantage of his time off by going to the temple!  My mom watched Molly and we went up and did sealings.  I had a few names that needed sealings, so it was perfect.  We thought we were choosing something that was quicker- since we needed to be home for kids- but it ended up almost taking as long as endowments... not quite though, but either way- it was awesome!  I just LOVE sitting there, in the sealing room, holding hands with my eternal companion.  Such a beautiful Spirit.  We just don't get to do that enough!  We grabbed Molly on our way home and made it back in time to get Jack.  10-16-18

SERVICE HOURS
I'm calling this that because I was really embarrassed that Nate was having the Deacons do service for us!  He says it was Travis's idea, but... still embarrassed.  I do have to say that I don't know if we could have done all the gravel without them!  The gravel was dropped off in the morning, and by 7:00 that night it was all spread out!  I did go out and help a little once I got dinner done, but without Travis and Jeremy and of course those cute deacons... such a cool little miracle!  Especially since we were leaving that night for Bear Lake!  Very awesome!

Week of 10-7-18

BRAD'S 14th BIRTHDAY!!
Brad got to sleep in a little on his birthday, woke up to THE COOLEST sign created by Kelly in "only" ONE HOUR the night before (her words).  It was amazing!  Then he got to have Creamed Eggs on Toast for breakfast and then opened presents before watching General Conference.  I would say it doesn't get better than having your birthday on Conference!  He probably would have loved to go fishing on his birthday, but at least he didn't have to get all dressed up and go to church.  He seemed to have a nice day.  We would randomly break out in "Happy Birthday" throughout the day.  10-7-18

COLUMBUS DAY
Molly and I went to music makers for our first day of Halloween songs (Molly liked the animal ones better).  After music makers we stopped and picked up Grandma Hatch and then met up with Grandma Ruthie, Aunt Jen, and Aunt Becky.  It was cute to hear Molly talk about having "TWO wahmahs!" We had a great time, ate yummy Mimi's Cafe food.  Good times.  That evening was Brad's basketball tryouts.  This was a rough day for him.  I'm so irritated about how things are run in the basketball department at KJH.  I know I just sound like a bummed mom, but seriously.  10-8-18

FHE
Jack taught the lesson, he had us all draw something on a piece of paper, then he went around and told everyone that they did a good job on their drawing except for one person and he pretended to make that person feel bad about what they had made. This was his object lesson to teach how it's better to be nice to people and say things that make them feel good.  How cute is that!  Thought of it all by himself!  We had cookies for my treat- even though I didn't eat any. We played Button Button for the activity.  It was so fun to watch Molly figuring out how to play this game and finally get it the last few rounds.  She would get all excited and scream and jump up and down... so cute!!  10-8-18

CHARITY'S ANSWER TO CHRISTMAS DANCE
I got a text earlier in the day from Jac asking what Charity's address was, so I wasn't too surprised when we were doorbell ditched that evening with a cute answer to the Christmas Dance.  I LOVE that he used the bucket and same theme, just with Cocoa Crispies as the "dirt" and a GIANT gummi worm.  Pretty fun stuff!  I am loving the high school life as a parent :).

BRAD CCR
We went in for Brad's CCR on Thursday.  I like this meeting because it gets the kids thinking about their future.  It's fun for me to talk about what their strengths are and hear what they think as well.  I like our counselor at the Junior High.  She is good at letting them be themselves.  The only thing I didn't like was when she was telling him that it might be better to take easier classes so that he can get better grades to get into BYU.  I know BYU doesn't weight harder classes (I think it's DUMB, but I know they don't) but why do we want to tell kids to be mediocre??  This is a smart SMART kid who can really do things when he applies himself.  Why not motivate him to try hard and push himself, challenge himself a little.  It frustrates me.  But whatever.  It's up to each of these kids anyway.  10-11-18

MY CRAZY DAY
My crazy day was Thursday.  It was really only a half day, but it was FULL CRAZY.  We had Nate working on the food for the Kaysville Stroll all day, then Race Cats races while Kelly was at her game- her game that she shot and made a buzzer beater shot! THE ONE GAME I DIDN'T GO TO!- and then had to race around getting Brad to his concert early, Noah to scouts (thanks to Cathie Nybo for taking him so we could get to the concert on time), and then back to WATCH Brad's concert.  Then over to the Stroll to help Nate and Kelly clean up.  Charity did end up going to Volleyball in the middle of it all.  And thankfully, Luke offered to stay home with Jack and Molly- such a blessing!  Doesn't sound all that crazy when I write it all out, but I was dying!  If only these things could be more spread out throughout the week.  Everything always happens at once.  10-11-18

RACE CATS RACE
This was our first Race Cats race- it was at Nichols Park.  We got there very early, got bibs on, played on the playground, watch the first two age groups go and THEN it was Noah and Erika's turn.  They had the 2008 and 2009 birthdays race at the same time.  That was nice for us :).  It is always so much fun to watch them run!  They are so good!  I loved seeing Noah come in so soon after the first place runner, in 5th place!  Then I turned to Emily to say, "Oh, I guess we'll see all the boys come in first" and before I could finish saying it- there was cute Erika- running around the corner to the finish line!  I couldn't believe it!!  I hadn't seen any other girls come through, but she was second in the girls!  I was SO IMPRESSED!!!!  She is such an amazing runner!  It was a lot of fun to see them race. 10-11-18

KELLY'S GOAL
Of COURSE Kelly scored her first goal of the season at the ONE GAME I couldn't see!  As bummed as I was that I didn't get to see it- I am pretty proud of her!  F'real here we come :).  10-11-18

KAYSVILLE STROLL
Everyone had really sold us on the Kaysville Stroll idea, when we were doing the market.  We weren't sure how it was going to go, being October and cold and all, but Nate braved it!  It's not fun to not know how things are going to go and the unknown is stressful for all of us, so I felt really bad that I wasn't going to be able to be there to help Nate set up and sell.  But Charity was with him and I heard all about them hauling things down the street from a block away and from the looks of it- they only hauled the bear minimum.  But by the time I got there, they were pros and had made themselves at home right next to the wood shop guy.  I'm not sure why they didn't put us with the food on the end, but whatever.  I was glad I got to be there for a little while after Brad's concert, and help clean up, but it was a bummer it wasn't a more productive night for him.  I think he broke even.  Which is good, but also not.  10-11-18

BRAD'S CHOIR CONCERT
This was Brad's first concert as a Choralier!  It was so fun to see him perform.  He looked so little up there with the 9th graders!  I forget how much growing boys do in that one year.  But I'm so proud of him!  I love that he stuck his neck out and tried out for such an impressive choir and that he has put his heart into it!  I loved the songs they sang and loved that I knew what he was singing because he's talked to me about the Pentatonix ones and how much he likes them.  Erika and I were happy to see Grandpa and Dawn there, fun to have their support at something like that.  He was excited to walk to Fiiz with his friends afterwards and stopped by to get some cash from us at the stroll on his way over :).  Good stuff. 10-11-18

DEACON CAMPOUT
Nate, Brad (even though he had his birthday, he wasn't TECHNICALLY a Teacher yet, so Nate let him go :) ), and Luke all headed out Friday afternoon for their monthly overnighter.  They seemed a little nervous about how cold it was going to be.  I was nervous for them too.  The rest of us juggled people so that we didn't have to squish in Nate's car for all the things like getting treats, Kelly's psychology experiment at Winco, and picking up Charity from work.  Kelly and I also squeezed in the project of painting one of the walls in their bed room.  We're going to have to do it in sections because we don't have a large enough chunk of time to just knock it all out!  Not to mention the room is just CRAMMED with stuff!!  But we did it!  Looks great!  It always surprises me how much a fresh coat of paint can really liven the place up!  Now I really want to do the living room!  Not sure why I'm choosing now to do this project when there are about a million other things I'd rather work on, but hopefully it's something the girls appreciate and enjoy.  Then we had a fun movie night.  The boys all ended up having a good time.  So did we!  10-12-18

ERIKA'S LAST SOCCER GAME
Erika had the hottest games and the coldest games this season!  Ended the season on a 8:00 am game!  It was pretty cold, but that didn't stop Grandpa Hatch from coming!  I was a little surprised to see him, even though he said he might come.  It was a lot of fun to have him there because I was cheering solo, with Nate, Brad, and Luke gone camping, Charity watching Molly and Jack who were sleeping in and Noah just stayed home :).  Erika scored two points!  She made a really awesome play with a teammate who was actually taking the ball down on a fast break and Erika ran up to help her and the other girl kicked it right to Erika, then Erika kicked it right in the goal!  It was awesome!  I loved that they was working together, doing what they'd practiced!  The other goal was a fast break for Erika.  She's great at those!  And it's way fun to watch :).  It was a good game.  She's really anxious and excited for Spring now!  10-13-18

We didn't have the van, and Erika had her soccer game, so Kelly rode with a teammate and the rest of the kids and I headed down after Erika's soccer game.  Charity stayed home because of car space and because she wanted to go to the Temple for Jarom's sealing.  We were bummed we didn't get to go to Jarom's baptism, but it just wasn't in the cards for us that day.  The kids and I got to Sandy right when Kelly's first game ended.  Which was good because she needed a ride out of there :).  But we had a couple hours to kill.  I took the kids on a little tour of my old neighborhood and Draper park.  They had a lot of fun playing.  It's always funny when there's a lot of time to kill.  I never really know how I'm going to kill it.  And unfortunately, you always have to get a little too creative for the first part of the time, and then right before you're done killing it, something big happens that suddenly takes up more than you have.  That happened to us when Jack pooped his pants!  We had to race around looking for a store that sells pants and underwear and wipes- this was the grossest part of my day.  Sorry, Jack, but there's a reason I potty trained you!!  I did feel bad for him, because he had just put off going and then the bathroom was too far away at the park.  He tried his best, I really don't blame him, but after sitting in the car for 20 minutes looking for a store.... well, you get the idea.  It was messy.  Luckily we finished cleaning up and got back to Kelly's game in time.  We all watched and cheered her on even though they were really struggling out there!  Both games that we saw we kinda got killed.  It was sad.  Before the last game we played at Storm Mountain park for a few minutes.  The second game, I had signed up to sit at the table, so I had the kids all come up and sit on the turf next to the table.  I was nervous about how that was going to go with Molly, so during the time between games, I downloaded a bunch of toddler games onto my phone.  That ended up being the perfect solution- she didn't make a peep almost the entire game!  Everyone else did really great too- with a few trips to the snack stand of course.  We were sad we lost, but tournaments are always fun anyway.  We made our way back home stopping in Salt Lake to have dinner with what we thought was going to be all the Maynes family at Chuck-a-rama, but when we got there learned that they had switched restaurants and were going to the Sugarhouse Sizzler.  Well, we were not about to drive BACK that way and we were all hungry and tired, so we just had dinner by ourselves.  It was actually a nice and pleasant time.  I liked it.  I mean, minus the fact that it was Chuck-a-rama.  Nate and the older four were pretty wasted from the day at the temple- Nate said they waited 40 minutes in the sealing room because the Sealer didn't even know he had an appointment that day!  Kinda nuts.  The kids had wanted to do baptisms, but didn't think they'd have time for the hour wait- turns out they would have been just fine.  Which was a bummer, but oh well.  10-13-18
