Just to Clarify

There seems to be some misunderstanding as far as what it is my husband does for a living. I thought that I would make a little post to clarify.

THIS:

is NOT what my husband does.

He did not uproot his family and drag them all the way up to Alaska for 2 years to become one of THESE:

they are actually referred to as "RAMP RATS". Very little training. NOT AIR Traffic Controllers.

When I tell you that my husband is an Air Traffic Controller please do not do the two-hands-holding-orange-flashlights-waving-forward-and-to-the-side hand motions. That is not what he does. (if you have, don't feel bad- nobody knows EVERYTHING..... except controllers.... somehow they do--- HA HA! just teasing you Nate!)

THIS:

is more like it.

Air traffic controllers are people who operate the air traffic control system to expedite and maintain a safe and orderly flow of air traffic and help prevent mid-air collisions. They apply separation rules to keep each aircraft apart from others in their area of responsibility and move all aircraft safely and efficiently through their assigned sector of airspace. Because controllers have a demonstrably large responsibility while on duty, the ATC profession is often regarded as one of the most difficult jobs today, and can be notoriously stressful.

Air traffic controllers are generally individuals with excellent memory, are organized, have spatial awareness, are quick with numeric computational skills, are assertive but calm under pressure, and are able to follow and apply rules yet be flexible when necessary. Almost universally, trainee controllers begin work in their twenties, and retire in their fifties. Rigid physical and psychological tests and excellent hearing and speaking skills are a requirement, and controllers must take precautions to remain healthy and avoid certain medications that are banned for controllers.

Most training focuses on honing the ability to absorb data quickly from a variety of sources, and to use this to visualize, in time and space, the position of each aircraft under control, and to project this forward into the near future. This skill is termed situational awareness (having the picture or having the flick), and is central to the job. Maintaining a constantly-moving visual scan among all aircraft under one's control, without "fixating" on a particular situation, is how controllers help maintain this overall flick. This is then used to make relatively simple rule-based decisions very quickly and accurately to keep aircraft separated in the sky while moving traffic as expeditiously as possible and presenting the traffic in an orderly and useful manner to the next sector.

Communication is a vital part of the job: controllers are trained to precisely focus on the
exact words pilots and other controllers speak, because a single misunderstanding about an altitude level or runway number for example can result in tragedy. Controllers communicate with the pilots of aircraft using a push-to-talk radiotelephony system, which has many attendant issues such as the fact only one transmission can be made on a frequency at a time, or transmissions will merge together and be unreadable.

As you can see, the perfect job for Nate :)

Nate does not work here:

While the tower is very cool, it is not the only place controllers work, nor is it a promotion that Nate is striving to acheive. It is simply another area of Air Traffic Control. Nate is an En Route controller. En Route has been known to be more difficult, and until the pay cuts a few years ago was a higher paying station (and hopefully will go back to being so when Obama fixes their contract!). The tower is not the only place that Air Traffic Controllers work (just remember that).

En Route controllers are responsible for the safety of aircraft at higher altitudes, in the en route phase of their flight. In most nations they are known as "area" or "en route" controllers. Airspace under the control of Area controllers is split into sectors which are 3D blocks of airspace of defined dimensions. Each sector will be managed by at least one Area controller. This can be done either with or without the use of radar: radar allows a sector to handle much more traffic, however procedural control is used in many areas where traffic levels do not justify radar or the installation of radar is not feasible.

Nate works in the Radar Center that is located just off of I-215 and 700 North.

Nate has had to study controlling with the use of radar AND the difficult task of controlling air traffic WITHOUT a radar. He relates this to directing traffic with your eyes closed and only having the use of radio for the driver to TELL you where they are. This whole idea stresses me out just thinking about it. Nate's sector has an area where there is no use of radar.

And speaking of stress. Air Traffic Control is known for the stress level. I can't count how many people would say, "I've heard that's a really stressful job!" Well, it is :)

Many countries regulate the hours that a controller can work on safety grounds. Research has shown that where controllers remain ‘in position’ for more than two hours even at low traffic levels, performance can deteriorate rapidly. Many national regulations therefore feature a two-hour limit on time spent controlling without a break, in addition to controls on length of shifts, number of night shifts done consecutively, length of time off required between shifts, etc. A typical work week for a controller is an 8 hour day, 5 days per week if the facility is correctly staffed. A hiring emergency in the United States has led to some locations having Air Traffic Controllers work 10 hours a day, 6 days a week (mandatory).

Typically, controllers work "on position" for 90 to 120 minutes then they get 30 minutes break. Except at quieter airports, Air Traffic Control is a 24 hours, 365-days-a-year job. Therefore controllers usually work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays. These are usually set twenty eight days in advance. In many countries the structure of controllers' shift patterns is regulated to allow for adequate time off.

Nate is a Federal Government employee. He works for the FAA (someone actually asked me to spell that! LOL funny huh. I mean, I realize that some people don't know what the Federal Aviation Administration is, but it still makes me laugh when I think about how I spelled out F-A-A to her :)). He does not work for the Airlines. He is not paid by the airlines. He is not to blame for the rediculous prices. He does not work at the airport (in case that is still unclear).

So let me just sum up what we've learned today :):
Nate is not a ramp rat, waving orange flashlights.
He is not hoping to one day be "promoted" to tower.
He is under a lot of stress, but he does receive a lot of help in the management of said stress.
He does not work at the airport, he works for the Government.
He is doing a great public service!

This is a very complex job that requires a LOT of training, and a LOT of mental capacity and awareness. This job is not for just anyone. It takes a certain kind of person. Nate's worked really hard and pushed himself a lot harder than we ever would have imagined. If you didn't catch me saying this before.... Nate is amazing, he can totally take it! And I'm proud of him. I hope it's okay for me to brag a little, but I was getting kind of sick of the orange-flashlight-hand-motion thingy..... it's somewhat insulting. Nate really couldn't care less and ya know why..... because he's a controller, not a control freak like me :)

And now for a little comic relief of the Control floor

I think I'll step down from off of my soap box now..... thank you very much.

My my how the years do fly!

Today is our 8th wedding anniversary! I had to make a little shoutout to my sweetheart and mention how much I love him. I really don't know what my life would be like without him. I feel like we've grown and learned so much with and from each other. I'm so grateful for someone who knows me and does his best to make sense of my craziness. Nate is amazing. I don't think I realized just how committed he could be to me and our family back when I chose to marry him, but it sure is a pleasant surprise! He really is everything I could have possibly asked for. And frankly I don't think I deserve most of him :) But somehow Heavenly Father has let this one slip through the cracks and he's let me keep him regardless :)

Nate, thank you!! I love you!! Happy Anniversary!!!!!
It was my year to plan our Anniversary. Nate worked till 3:00 and the boys had a little Jurassic aPARKment (dino party) at Aunt Jen's that night, so it was nice that we had plenty of time for our date, AND 2 less kids to find a sitter for :). Thankfully, my Mom took Noah and the girls, and the rest of us headed up to West Jordan to drop the boys off at Meg's (thanks again, Meg! even though we probably could have taken them ourselves :) my brain is running on empty apparently) so that she could take them to Jen's and we could have just a little bit longer for our date. I took Nate to see Wolverine. VERY GOOD SHOW!!! I would seriously recommend it to anyone, I personally loved it and I'm really not a big X-Men fan, so that's saying a lot. I told Nate that now I need to see the others. I think they'll make more sense and be more interesting to me now. Nate liked it too I think :) Then we went to one of Nate's favorite restaurants, Famous Dave's for dinner. It wasn't the most romantic date, but I wanted to do things that Nate would like. And since I really had no idea how long this date would take (because it's been FOREVER since we had time to go to dinner and a movie), we ended up with an extra 45 minutes and got to go over to Kohl's and bought me a new shirt (90% off!!! SO GOOD! :). I got Nate a little GPS for his new Geocaching obsession. He was so cute about it and so excited! That made me happy. When we got home I was surprised with a beautiful bouquet of 2 dozen red and white roses that had been delivered earlier. I have the sweetest husband. That was our 8th Anniversary.

Saturdays are OUT! Mondays are IN!

Now that Nate works Saturdays and has Mondays off, we've kind of turned Mondays into our Saturdays. We try to get out and do something different. This one was really fun. The latest thrill for our kids is to go to the "Red Park" and make sand castles. Luke actually says, "Hey! I got an idea! Wet's go to the RED PAWK and build SAND CASSOS!!!!!" like every morning when we're dropping the girls off at school. Like it's a brand new idea that we've never done. So anyway. I finally had my camera with me there, and went a little picture happy..... just trying to max out this Picasa account too :)

ummm... can I say.... CUTEST FACE EVER!!!

It's adorable how much Noah gets into this too!

Luke's all business when he's making his.

They have to carry their buckets a pretty long way to get the water to make the good mud for sandcastles, but it's SO worth it!

I love how Luke's totally checking out Brad's :)

Noah gets bored after a while and goes over to the playground. I keep telling him that if he would just walk he wouldn't have to get his pants all dirty!

This is his, "why does she keep asking me where Daddy is?! GEES!" (I was trying to get him to turn around and look at me :))

Sensory time for Noah :) He's not to fond of the feel of the mud.

Nate really got into this with the kids. It was nice to just be able to watch and take pictures for a change. I think my shoes are permanently filled with sand now from all our visits to the red pawk.

So after we picked up Charity from school we headed on up to Nate's Parents' house. It's been so long since we did anything with them so it was a much needed visit. We got to enjoy the beautiful lake right by their house, and the incredible park as well! Daybreak is sure a nice place to live. I think if it weren't for the HOA's rules and fees and stuff, Nancy would have me sold on the place. Especially because of that Lake! SO FUN!

This is us walking to the park.

I really didn't give any kind of heads up on this picture, so no one's smiling, sorry, but I thought it was cute to have a picture of the girls walking next to Grandma Ruthie riding her bike. She is so amazing!! She rides her bike EVERYWHERE!!! And I actually got a turn on Grandpa's, it was REALLY fun!! Something about it being different just made it really fun I think.

Here's cute Jarom and Noah on the swings. You can tell Noah's liking Meg's act so much better :) He kept watching her :)

Playing in the sand some more

I love how Charity made herself comfy next to Noah for a while to offer him some company. Cute big sister.

This park was amazing! So many fun and DIFFERENT toys to play on! You can tell Nate's having as much fun as the kids.

I wish my camera hadn't died before Nate piled four kids on this thing and spun them around... it was hilarious!
After the park we got to go to Quiznos with Grandma and Grandpa and then some ice cream afterward. It was so nice to be able to spend some time with them alone. We don't get to do that often enough. Really reminded me of when they came to visit in AK. Good times. Mondays are so fun now!

Happy Mother's Day

I had an awesome Mother's Day. Nate always spoils me pretty good. The kids too, they're so sweet to me on Mother's Day (more than usual). I woke up to Lukey telling me that "Daddy's bwekfast for you." (so much for the surprise :)) And then a few minutes later cute little Luke brought me a piece of some yummy bacon (he usually brings me a handful of cereal or a cracker or two in the mornings). He was just funny because Nate was trying to let me sleep in. HA! So then Nate came in with Luke and Noah and a CUTE little metal family stand that you can screw all the little stick people into it to represent your family- it's way cute, I'll have to get a picture. But he brought in his little person and one for Noah and Luke and then they, all three, had different flowers for me too. Then in came Brad with a flower and his little person, then Kelly and Charity. Charity was carrying my yummy breakfast too. It was SO SWEET!! Apparently Nate had told the kids to pick out the prettiest flower at the flower shop. He was lucky they picked the cheaper ones (LOL), but it was SO CUTE to me that they got to pick them out. They are still telling me which one they gave me and why they liked it and so on. It's really cute. Nate gave me white and yellow which are the same ones he sent me after our first date :) very sentimental! So then they sent me on a cute little treasure hunt to give me another present..... a day at the Garden Spa! I'm so excited for that!!! Then at church the kids sang a really sweet song (not one of the usual ones) and I of course BAWLED. Brad had told his Daddy that he was going to make me cry.... couldn't let him down. He actually had me laughing pretty hard at the beginning just because he had on such a cute smile. The girls were funny because I guess they were supposed to keep the song a secret, and I wasn't supposed to know it was a new one. They sure did a good job. It was a special day for me!
It was a really nice day. I don't know why, but I just LOVE Mother's Day. I love thinking about being a mother and motivating myself to be a better one. I love thinking of all the blessings I've received as a mom and all the special moments. It's just a fun day for a Mom! I remember back when I was in High School and I had been told by my doctor that I would have a difficult time getting pregnant, and I remember for several Mother's Days, that was really weighing on my mind. I worried that I would never get to be one. But Heavenly Father had a different plan and I am just SO grateful for that blessing!!! My little miracles that make me a mom. Then it's cool to think about all the Moms that have made a difference in my life. My mom of course, and Nate's mom. It's just nice to be able to recognize the people who get very little recognition. So anyway, sorry to get all mushy, but I do love this day.

A Funny Story

K, so Charity lost another tooth two Sundays ago. Actually I'm going to take some credit and say that I pulled it. She was THRILLED!!! She loves the excitement of telling her class and getting money from the tooth fairy.... all of it is just so fun for her. So you can imagine the disappointment when the tooth fairy FORGOT to leave money under her pillow Sunday night. Charity decided (much to mine and Nate's pleasure) that "the tooth fairy probably just doesn't work on Sundays!" This was okay with her and she was all set to just put the tooth under her pillow again on Monday night. Well, a very tragic accident happened and poor, sweet, little Charity LOST her tooth either AT temple Square, or somewhere in the car on the way home. I had warned her of this when she chose to wear the tooth necklace around, but she didn't want to listen. So anyway. The tooth was gone!!! How was she going to get her money from the tooth fairy????? She was stressing. And I mean REALLY stressing! I finally told her to just leave a note for the tooth fairy under her pillow to explain what happened :) This is the funny part. This is what she wrote:

Dear Tooth Fairy,
I lost my tooth in the car. I promise I lost my tooth, you can even look in my mouth. I'll keep my mouth OPEN wide. If I find my tooth I'll give it to you.
Love
Charity Maynes

I just can't get over how cute this is.

The tooth fairy surprised her with two dollars and a note (Nate's cute idea, I have the cutest husband) telling her that she's sorry Charity lost her tooth and that she was giving her 2 dollars instead of just one for taking so long to get it to her :) Charity thinks that she's going to pull all of her teeth on Sundays so that she can get two dollars instead of just one everytime :) Very smart little girl. So anyway. I just thought this was noteworthy. Charity's adorable.
