Kelly and I have been planning her party for a few months now, getting all excited about every little thing we saw on Pinterest and finding new pins. This Saturday was the big day! Since the theme was "Water Party" she made some cute water bottle invitations. We set up a slip-n-slide, a wading pool, got water squirter thingies at the dollar store, we made a cool watermelon punch bowl, and then to top it off, her WATERMELON CAKE!! It was spectacular! She did most of the work, I just helped her cut the fruit. It was SO MUCH FUN to make it with her! The bottom layer is watermelon with the rind, second layer, watermelon, then canteloupe, pineapple and then the top of the pineapple (this was an after thought and Kelly liked it so much, we left it there... kinda cool :) ). Then we added kabobs covered in fruit chunks all around the sides, just shooting outward, and then topped those off with star and flower shaped fruit! Once I got over the fact that once again, my cake decorating skills weren't going to be an asset, we had a lot of fun with it. And I must add that while I am happy about knowing how to make nice cakes and decorate them, that was never the point when I was making my kids' cakes each birthday. It was about making something that they would enjoy. It's nice that I still have a few kids that like the usual old cake and frosting cakes, but I think we can have so much fun doing something different and creating interesting, new ones. This one will go down in the books. One of my favorites. Anyway!
As the party guests arrived, we had them go in the back yard get their squirter, and everyone got really into the whole thing. It was fun to watch them be little girls, yet almost preteens at the same time :). They were so sophisticated one minute and then just giddy, silly girls the next :). I LOVE this age for that reason. Anything goes :). They ate, played, ate, played, ate and played! It was hard for me to just sit inside and watch, but they were really having a lot of fun. I love that.
Kelly came in and announced that they were ready for the cake, so Nate and I were out there for that. Since I was out there, I sat down and realized we'd forgotten half of the things we had planned! Along with the flip flop cookies I took out there at the last minute, we forgot our balloon pinatas! This would have been fun to have prepared before, but the anticipation was building for the girls as I hung each one up. They ended up being more like little dunking tanks by the time the idea came to full fruition. They stood there for quite a while as I filled up each of the large birthday balloons then tied above their heads from the awning. It was a lot of fun to listen to them get excited about this. They were all calling out rules and ideas and fighting over who got what color. It was hilarious. Finally, when I was done, they were all standing under a balloon, facing away from me, with their eyes closed, I went around and popped each one (with a kabob stick- multifunctional!), and their little girly shrieks filled the air!! It was awesome! I loved it :). I think they liked it too!
Kelly opened her presents. She wanted to do the guessing game where each guests says something to her in a disguised voice and she guesses who it is. If she guesses right, she gets to open their present. It was so funny how hard this was for her! Everyone got several tries :). It's fun to do. After that, they played their little hearts out! It was a lot of fun!
I couldn't believe how many water balloons we went through. I will never underestimate how many to fill up ever again. :).
