BARBARA'S SHARING TIME
In an answer to my prayers, I felt more useful this Sunday in Primary. It was nice. Thanks to Heavenly Father. 4-22-18
SABBATH
We had a great Sunday! The kids did awesome at keeping it holy. I must say we've improved! Felt good. We even got to have a visit from the Empey's! I just love Stacey! I miss her!! 4-22-18
FHE
For Family Night this week we had to kind of improvise. Kelly had a game, so we all went to that together minus Charity who had another AP review. Kelly played so awesome! She gives all the credit to the Varsity team's game right before where they barely won in double overtime elimination! Which was really fun and very intense! But Kelly did score twice! She really has gotten good- it's so fun to watch her play! Then when we were headed home we decided to bag our official assignments (Charity was supposed to be the lesson so nobody had planned anything) and just ended up having a song, prayer, scripture, treat and game (which was either Kelly's or the Jazz game). We had brownies for the treat and then stayed up WAAAAAAAAAAAAY past bedtime watching game three of the Jazz vs Thunder. Thankfully we won and it wasn't all for nothing, but we had some VERY tired kids the next morning who even got up before the crack of dawn for Temple Tuesday! Crazies!! Not sure how I feel about it all. But I do know there will not be any more late nights on school nights. Anyway- here's to next week when life is more in order. 4-23-18
TEMPLE TUESDAY
I couldn't believe Kelly, Bradley, and Luke all got up this morning, said goodbye to me at a quarter to 5:00 and went to the temple! After staying up til 11:30 the night before!! Such awesome kids! And I loved hearing Luke say, "Since this is going to be a good day..." made me smile! And he's my kid that never answers, "Me!" when I ask, "Who's going to have a good day today?" as we're driving to school. So this was big and I can only assume it was because of the temple. Good boy. (Charity stayed home because she was supposed to go register for her AP test, but slept in and I had no idea she was still here so I didn't even wake her up until it was too late! So that was a bummer. She missed both the temple and the registering. Hopefully there really is a make up registration day.) 4-24-28
SOFTBALL FOR THE GIRLS, BASEBALL FOR THE BOYS
Erika's and Noah's games were at the same time today. So we decided to divide and conquer. I made the executive decision that just out of convenience and so that nobody had to hurt anyone's feelings (this is so not like me now that I'm typing it all out) that we would have the girls go to Erika's game and the boys go to Noah's :). Worked out great except that Kelly had a team dinner so she didn't get to come to Erika's. But anyway. Erika did awesome!! She hit the ball both times she was up to bat and made it around the bases and home. Her second hit was definitely the hit of the game! All the way over 2nd base!! So cool. Her age group still don't really know what they are doing right now so it's not quite as exciting as we'd all like it to be, but we had fun and loved watching Erika play! Molly and Charity ate popcorn and ice cream and played on the playground and with her phone and we met Lindee's neighbor/friend. It was a busy game :). The boys all seemed to love Noah's game. I guess he struck out his first time up to bat because he didn't wear his glasses. But then had to walk his second time and made it almost all the way around the bases and would have scored if they didn't have the dumb mercy rule. But anyway. Good times! Good games! It must be spring! 4-24-18
TRACK MEET TAKE TWO
Okay, so maybe I was wrong. I knew the first track meet could be rough and was looking so forward to knowing what was going on at the second one, but that is not how it happened. I got a call from Brad (from a friend's phone of course- he so needs his own phone calling capabilities, but anyway) at 2:10 saying that he was getting ready for his first event Discus throwing and were we almost there? Well, of course we weren't there- I had called Northridge High office and they told me the meet started at 3:00!! It was a frantic, mad dash to the meet, but Nate and I made it, ditching all the rest of the kids at home (along with my picking up jr. high kid responsibilities- oops). This has meant so much to Brad, we've both felt like we wanted to be super supportive. So I think that's why we felt the need and urgency to drop everything right then and BOTH go. Erika came with us. Well, we got to the school and found where he was before 2:30, but he was nowhere near ready to compete- they still had a very long line of girl throwers to go through. And actually, not that we knew it at the time, a whole other flight or fight (whatever, we're still not sure if that's what it's called) of girls after that first one before they would even START on the boys. Which is really weird since the whole reason Brad called us was because they had said, "Last call for boys Discus" over the PA. So anyway- we were all a little clueless and for good reason. But we were okay waiting a little. So we sat on the grass and made ourselves comfortable. It was a good thing we were comfortable because it was a VERY long wait!! About an hour and a half after getting there, we heard the announcement for Brad's relay- he still had NOT done a thing with the discus. So we moved over to the bleachers for his relay and got to watch him compete- he was second this time, instead of third like last week, and did really well! Unfortunately, our team lost it in the third and fourth 100's, and Kaysville came in last. But it was fun to cheer Brad on- he's gotten really fast! So proud of him! After that we moved back over to our matted spots on the grass and waited some more. I don't know if I can express how long we waited by just saying an amount of time, I mean, it was hot, the sun was beating on us (we all got sunburned), it was a long wait! Nate was sleeping, I laid down and slept for a minute. Poor Erika only had her little candy bar to keep her company for part of it. Then FINALLY around 4:45 they finally started the boys discus! We were SO excited and so relieved. (I just realized I haven't even mentioned that my phone DIED on the way to the meet so this whole time I didn't even have a phone!!! It was torture. I was lucky Emily's number was on the church thing so that I could call her on Nate's phone and she was so kind to pick up the KJH kids for me. Even though Rachel wasn't even there. Bless her!) So we sat up and got all anxious and excited that Brad was finally going to compete and our excitement was slowly snuffed out as we heard the names called. The first flight did not include Brad. We watched them all compete and watched Nate's clock at the same time, hoping that by some miracle he would be in the next flight. We knew we needed to leave by 5:30 to get Nate home in time to go to the movie with Travis, so we were on pins and needles. It was pretty heart-wrenching when we heard them move Brad to the THIRD flight because there were guys who needed to go to other events. We knew there was no chance we'd be able to see him compete so we took down camp and packed up to leave. It was so heart breaking to have to leave him there alone. I know it's not a huge deal and I'm glad he gets opportunities to do things on his own sometimes, but I really wanted to be there for him for that. It was hard to leave. If I hadn't had a kid to get to baseball and one to get to softball, I might have tried to figure out a different way home myself. But anyway. We left him. He actually did pretty good on his discus, we found out after, he got 60 feet. I guess that was only eighth place, but still! I was proud of him! He's trying new things and branching out which I think is really cool. He ended up getting a ride home on the bus and WALKING (after his crazy long day) to Gailey park (where we were for Noah's game) from the school! Pretty smart kid. It was such a pleasant surprise when he showed up. I was wondering how he was going to let me know where he was. He really needs a cell phone to call with. Here's to next meet! Maybe then we can get it right? 4-26-18
SOFTBALL AND BASEBALL AT THE SAME TIME
We had another "divide and conquer" night only this time Nate was at the movie with Travis, so Kelly volunteered to go with Erika to her softball game and Luke volunteered (so awesome, especially since he had been tending them at home ALL afternoon!) to watch Jack and Molly at Gailey park with me while I watched Noah's game! I was so happy for the little tip I got from the still small voice to bring the sand toys so they could play in the volleyball pit- what a HUGE success that was! So awesome that I followed that prompting. Erika played well, talked about how her coach let the ones who had their mitts on and ready to go choose where they played- Erika chose first, second and third bases throughout the game and was able to get THREE outs!! Pretty sweet! Noah had an awesome hit out between third and second base, but unfortunately it was caught. Then he got hit by a stray pitch another time, and then had to walk. He did end up scoring which was the big goal. Same with Erika. But anyway- good stuff. I was exhausted and luckily didn't have to do much but watch the fun game. It was a big day! Brad showed up in the middle of Noah's game looking like a champion. It was a relief to see him. And cute Kelly and Erika went "adventuring" to kill the time between when her game got done and Noah's. Cool stuff. This evening/day was a family effort! Nate came home slightly depressed from the new Avengers movie and not happy with the ending. I guess we'll wait til the next one comes out before seeing it. Chips and queso for our track star (he needed dinner) and frosties for our scored points and spectators! 4-26-18
NATE
I just have to post about how much work Nate has done in the yard lately! It's been so nice to see some progress in the back! He weeded the whole garden area! It was so nice of him! 4-27-18
GOODBYE MRS. ASHLIMAN
Kelly's favorite teacher, Mrs. Ashliman, is retiring this year! We were lucky enough to hear about her reception, so we scrambled Kelly down to Holbrook to say goodbye to her. It was a lot of fun to go to Holbrook again! I don't miss the temperature in that building AT ALL, and it was fun to run into some old friends. We saw Anna Sanders and her boys Cole and Bennett- Kelly actually got in a pretty involved conversation with Cole and Talmage Ball and ended up with their phone numbers before we left! She's been texting with them ever since- funny girl. We saw Jackie Winter from the 24th ward! LOVE THAT WOMAN!! She's the Primary President now! No surprise there, although she did make an amazing secretary. We saw Kim Ball- why does that not surprise me :). I am pretty sure Heavenly Father has put her in my path whenever he possibly can! Poor Kim, but lucky for me :). I love her so much. She is so sweet and fun to talk to. We need to get together with Andrea again and go to dinner. We saw Mrs. Holbrook who actually remembered Kelly! Wouldn't have recognized her, but remembered her! Pretty amazing! What Kindergarten teacher does that? She was so amazing too. We saw Mrs. Davis who called Kelly, Charity, Mrs. Buttars was there, but I didn't even attempt to talk to her. Kelly saw Hannah, the girl who cried about everything at Kelly's birthday party, HA! Funny the stuff we leave as a memory for other people. And last but not least, we saw Mrs. Ashliman. The best teacher on the planet! I seriously have yet to meet a teacher quite like her. And that's saying a lot because we have had some amazing ones. But she was so sweet and happy to get a picture with Kelly and showed us her marionette that the teachers had made for her- looked just like her, it was so cool! She is just so remarkable. I hope she enjoys her retirement. Kelly and I hurried home to pick up Brad from track practice. Lots of fun! 4-27-18
JAZZ VS. THUNDER GAME 6
This was a big game! We were all on pins and needles all day!! Nate even mentioned a few times how stressed out he was and that he "just wanted to win!" So we were all gearing up for it all afternoon! We decided early on in the evening we wanted to try to project the game on the back of the house and watch it back there for fun, and after about an hour and a half of my fiddling around with chromecast and dish network, found out we needed an iPhone to HDMI adapter plug. Kinda pricey, but totally worth it :). I got back and had it all hooked up in record time. It was a lot of fun to watch it like that! Would have been perfect if the rain hadn't joined us! We paused the game at about the end of the third quarter and rushed inside to finish it. It was such a stressful game! Thunder was ahead for like half the game and then we bounced back and forth through the last half. The refs were terrible and didn't call anything right, so that was stressful. We had lost Rickie Rubio in the first quarter which was devastating. But thankfully, Donovan Mitchell got some steam and just blew up!! He was so amazing that fourth quarter! My favorite part was when he went up to shoot, had the ball stolen then turned around and stole it right back, like INSTANTLY! it was so amazing, then ran back down and made a shot. It was so cool how he pulled us out of that deficit! We were three ahead at the last forty seconds and the Thunder had the ball. They were going to go for the three, but tried, then got the rebound, tried again, then got the rebound, tried again, (this was the most ridiculous part of the game- so bizarre! and Nate's screaming, "GET THE BALL!!!" at the Jazz), missed AGAIN and then we finally stole it and took it down and it looked like a little kid game of tag when they were running around with the ball, trying not to get fouled, but luckily, they fouled Mitchell. He hit them both! So awesome! So now we were five ahead and not much time left. Thunder got the ball, took it down to shoot a three, and totally missed it AGAIN!! IT WAS SO AWESOME!!! And of course our house erupted when they did, because we won the game!!! This was just too cool. The playoffs are so exciting this year thinking we might win and everything! So much fun! So there ya have it- now we move on to play in the second round! I hope we make it further- it's too much fun with our family. 4-27-18
HKRS
The kids had another awesome race day. They all did great! They all improved their time from last week which earned them all smoothies :). Well, Jack and Molly chose a "honut" (haha!! "I want duh honut!" she can say duh for "the", but not the "dough" in "donut" HAHA!! love that girl). 4-28-18
GARDEN
We stopped at the store on our way home from the races to get some seeds for our garden! This is always very exciting. Sometimes the excitement dies down after we plant them because we are not the best gardeners yet :). But picking out the seeds is always fun. We got (let's see if I can remember them all): beans, (we want to get peas too, but they didn't have any), sage, cilantro, basil, brussell sprouts, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, spinach, kale, luke picked out pumpkins and watermelon, Erika got some sunflowers, and Jack got some carrots, and we got cantaloupe, spaghetti squash, six different kinds of peppers which Nate planted mild to hot, and we still have our raspberries and strawberries- hopefully they'll give us some fruit this year. So lots to take care of :). I am hopeful and feeling motivated to take good care of it this year. We're eating a lot more of these things now with our new nutritional needs, so I think it will be more of a priority. We were able to get it all planted this afternoon (after I went and lead the music at Jacob Noriega's baptism- that was so neat! I loved that he gave his own talk! And Austin's prayer at the end! So cool! Such a neat family.). We had almost everyone out there working on it together! So that was cool. I loved it. We're happy to be on top of it this year and getting it done at the right time. Now for the rest of the yard :). 4-28-18
BASKETBALL PARK
After a long day of working in the yard and planting our garden, we needed a break so we all went down to Basketball park after Nate and Charity left for work. We all did our things- Brad and Luke (and eventually Noah and Erika) played basketball, Noah had his rip stick, Erika had her roller blades, Jack had been super upset about going because he was drawing, so he brought his sketch pad, but I don't think he touched that thing the whole time we were there. If only he could just trust me sometimes with my ideas and see that I do have fun ones once in a while. He played on the playground with Molly. He attempted the monkey bars a few times, but refused help from Kelly to get advice about how to do it. He knows how already. Molly walked around on the curb for most of the time and fell and skinned her need a few times. Not too bad, but her owies, "ho hurt!" for the rest of the night. That means so hurt. Kelly sat on the bench with me and then broke into a game of throwing pine cones at each other with Jack. She's still a little kid at heart :). It was a nice little break and fun way to enjoy the nice weather! Then we went and got the smoothies they all earned and took one to Charity at her work. Who doesn't love being visited while they're bored at work :). I think she liked it :). We came home for Luke's calzones and sent Kelly off to babysit for Meredith. 4-28-18
