St. Patrick's day is my holiday :). It's the best holiday because it takes little to no planning and is super easy to spruce it up :). I've always liked that I didn't feel the need to compare myself to other moms and what they're doing. It's just easy :). Put a little green food coloring in something and viola! you're festive :).
It's been a few years now where we really got into it. Not because we didn't want to. This year, I was determined to make it a different day. Just for the fun of it. I was SO excited that morning, when Nate remembered that I'd wanted to have Lucky Charms for breakfast, and he went to the store before everyone got up and picked up a couple boxes of Lucky Charms for the occasion :). See how easy. I put some green food coloring in the bottoms of the bowls before pouring in the cereal and surprise! green milk. The kids loved it :). And I loved not having to make breakfast. We RARELY (and I mean R A R E L Y) eat cold cereal for breakfast anymore- thanks to the jack up in price. We do however get it occasionally for Jack's church treats :). ANYWAY! For lunch Bradley insisted that I color the mayo in their sandwiches green... again with the green food coloring... they looked disgusting. I don't think I could have eaten those. Charity said that a boy in her class said, "Go big or go home!" when he saw her sandwich. Referring to our way of celebrating :).
I was so thrilled to have Nate on board with me, getting all excited for the cute little ideas I'd had for the day. It's been a while since we were both able to put energy into something like this. We went and bought the usual gold candy to hunt for, and then some fruit for dinner.
The whole day, I had the words from this article I'd seen on facebook, going through my head- "drop the holidays down a notch!" And normally I would totally agree with this! All of the holidays have really gotten out of hand in my opinion. But like I said, that's why I liked St. Patty's so much. It's like a free holiday :). So I was kinda bummed that they had so many negative things to say about doing fun stuff to celebrate it. I get that it's supposed to be a green shirt day and that's all- I really do- but when there's something that the whole family can get excited about and enjoy together, how can I pass it up? I liked doing fun things for our family this year. We can't do it all every year, but we don't, so it's all good. I really did just love doing it for them.
My only regret now is that I didn't get more pictures!
I made them a little treasure hunt. It was a little crazy because I threw it together at the last minute. At each clue location they had to complete a task before they could get their next clue. Some of them were simple like jumping jacks, but one of them was a service at the Maughan's house. I'm hoping they don't hate me later for making them work to get their "pot of gold". I still haven't remembered to buy a Halloween pot- we always just use a cooking pot :). But I was proud of myself for doing actual clues this time instead of just making them look for it :). They seemed like they had fun with it :).
We had a rainbow for dinner along with some delicious smoked ribs, courtesy of Nate, and that wasn't for St. Patrick's Day, that was because they were going to go bad :)
The kids humored me with some pictures... I'm not sure why Charity doesn't have a green shirt. She ended up wearing Nate's tie for her green. Jack too... kinda weird.
Not quite like the old days when I used to take pictures on St. Patty's Day, but I've screwed it up enough over the last couple of years, I couldn't let a pink and blue shirt ruin it for me :).
Crazy to think these are all our kids! The circle sure has grown!! I should try to find my old ones just to compare.
I know these all look the same to most people, but they're not :). So I posted them all :)
I'm starting to think that I no longer have any blond haired children! :) Lighting maybe.... or whatever.
The highlight of my day was when Noah came down and said, "Ya know how we ate all that green stuff this morning... well, guess what just happened to me?!"
He had just come out of the bathroom, so Nate made an educated guess, "Your poop was green too?"
With the biggest, most excited smile I've seen in a while, Noah rapidly nodded his head and said, "YEAH!"
Hilarious.
