Wednesday night (not Tuesday night like we had thought and then driven all around to find) was the Fire station Open House at the Eaglewood Fire Station. It was a lot of fun! They had the ID kits, the demo for CPR (or CCR as they are starting to call it because it is Cardio Cerebral Resusitation. They figure you are pumping the lungs when doing the compressions and that there is more need to keep the blood going to the head than breathing into the mouth. So if you're alone, no breaths. Also, it's 30 compressions to 2 breaths now.... so crazy....), they had the balloons, the smoke house!, the fire trucks to climb into and the little relay race..... we did a LOT of stuff! Charity helped the fireman remind me that we need to make sure our family has a "plan" and a meeting place in case of an emergency. I felt terrible because we really hadn't done much by way of preparing for this type of emergency since we moved into the basement. Back in Eagle Mountain I remember doing our little practicing crawling around with our eyes closed and learning which exits to use.... all that good stuff. But we have FAILED to do that here!! Pretty sad. So anyway, the guilt trip only lasted a short while and then they showed us how smokey your house can get and how fast the smoke spreads when the doors are open. I had no idea.... well, I guess it makes sense, I just hadn't thought about it at all. Smoke is the "silent killer". Unfortunately for us we don't have a lot of doors to close. They showed us how thick the smoke is as well. It's crazy how bad it is! And not like the movies at all. The kids all demonstrated such agility in the little obstacle course they had set up. They got to use the firehose (which I think is just cool!) then they got their own certificate and hat! I should have already mentioned that Noah was in Fire Truck heaven!!! He was LOVING this whole night. He spent a lot of time in the truck and asking if we would shut the door (make the experience more real I'm sure), close the window :). He really had a great time. Luke spent a lot of time fretting over his balloon. He wasn't really sure what to do with it, he wasn't comfortable with letting go of it(while it was tied to his wrist), but didn't really want to hold it either.... then the wind started..... it was just hard for him to enjoy himself. But I think he still had a good time. Brad, Kelly and Charity all enjoyed asking questions, trying out the stretcher, letting their balloons go.... I think they enjoyed it. Charity got a little too much information I'm afraid. We spent the whole ride home convincing her that the house was not going to burn down that night. She's so smart it's sometimes hard to reason with her. Nate had a good time talking with one of the firemen. He got lots of info and fun facts :) I liked the ambulance most. I really want to drive one someday..... we'll see. So anyway. It was a fun family night. I think we found a new fettish for Noah and now he wants a "firetruck cake!" I guess he's over the "happy nato cake"...... fun stuff :)
