Okay so I'm horrible at keeping up on my blog. Never thought I would come to this point. I was so good for so long. It's all good. I guess I'll upload some pictures and get those on here, and then just add the details that I've missed. Thanks to Wendy I'm going to go back to my Journaling posts because it was keeping me on top of things.
LUKE THE CUB SCOUT
Because one of Luke's first activities with the cub scouts would have been the Blue and Gold Banquet and because his leader was thinking ahead and knew he'd feel left out not having participated in the things that lead up to it, she offered to let him come to scouts a few weeks BEFORE he turned 8. I'm so impressed with the fact that she even noticed. Makes me happy. He was of course more than happy to go early! And thanks to Aunt Jen, he even had the shirt to wear to the meetings. He seems to be loving it. He feels cool too, that's the most important part.
SCIENCE FAIR
We had our Science Fair. Kelly and Charity both were required to participate and they both put so much work into their projects. I was really proud of their hard work and the things they learned from it all. They were both disappointed that they didn't win anything or move on to the next level, but there's always next year. I spent some time judging this year too, so now I see what they grade on. It really has very little to do with the actual project. More to do with how well they represent it. Kind of lame if you ask me. The ones that won were cool, but not as cool as some of the other projects. Anyway. Charity did a Working Memory one, and Kelly did hers on whether people would choose a healthy snack or an unhealthy snack. They both made such nice displays and worked so hard! I was really proud of them both. I'll post those pictures later I guess. 1-16-14
ABIGAYLE'S BLESSING
Chris and Stephanie invited us to their baby Abby's blessing. We had a nice time. It's always nice to participate in such a sweet ordinance. The kids were so well-behaved through the whole thing, that was nice. Everyone kept telling us how awesome they were. We know :). We're happy for Chris and Stephanie. 1-19-14
FEEDING THE MISSIONARIES
We had Monday off and had signed up to feed the missionaries that day so we spent a lot of the day getting our house presentable and smoking wings. The kids all had friends over and bummed around... good times. We were so happy to have this opportunity,. We did it so often in Alaska, and haven't done it at all since then, so it was a lot of fun to have missionaries in our home again. We love missionaries. The kids did great. They were good at not being too shy and just having fun and talking to the missionaries. Brad had a little contest with one of the Elders to see who could eat the most wings. This kid is like seven feet tall, so for Brad to have beat him would be insane!!! I am actually not sure what the tally was at the end, but Bradley slept like a baby! They had fun. They did an awesome family home evening lesson for us. Showed us a really cool analogy/object lesson for the Prophet. With his pen. I'm going to have to use that in my lesson on the 23rd. It was a lot of fun. I love these experiences for my kids. 1-20-14
THE BOOK THIEF
I went to my first Book Club meeting. I've been a little apprehensive about this whole thing because I've never really been a reader. But I really enjoyed The Book Thief and had a great time at the first meeting. Good times!! I think I'm in. And for the record, I guess I am a reader- I've already read 3 other books since then, that Nate has been wanting me to read. Along with 2 others that I haven't finished. So I'm going to give myself a little more credit :). It's a fun new hobby! 1-23-14
LUKE'S LUNCH WITH THE MAYOR
Luke is such a good student, he was chosen to have lunch with the Mayor! We are so proud of him!! He was pretty proud of himself too :). He loves reciting the paper that tells why he was chosen. What a cool kid. Good job Lukey!! 1-24-14
CHARITY'S SPELLING BEE
Charity won her class spelling bee and got to move on to the school one. We all showed up in support (minus Erika and Nate- Kate's house and work) of our favorite Charity. Even Grandma Hatch and Simon came. Charity was fantastic!! She did such a great job! I am amazed at all the talent you can cram into one little person. She accidentally said, "c" instead of "s" (we all know she knows how to spell it) in the word "solemn" and got out at 4th place!!!! Kind of a bummer because it's the top three who move on, but hey, at least we don't have to sit through another district Spelling Bee :) HAHA!! I'm totally kidding!! Even Charity was bored last time though. She should be proud and I hope she keeps up the good spelling.
One of my favorite parts of the whole thing was watching cute, little Lukey getting into it. Even though he was all wrapped up in an intense game of Temple Run on my phone, each time it was Charity's turn, his little head would pop up, all of his fingers would cross, he would get all tense, and then as she spelled the word right, he would heave a sigh of victory and fist pump and then get back to his game. It was fun to watch him care :). I love sibling love. 1-24-14
BASKETBALL
I don't know if I've made this clear, but we've really been enjoying the boys' basketball games. The girls cheer the whole time, and really get into them! They're really good. Bradley and Luke especially. It's been fun to watch Nate coach them as well. Even though I'm the one who suggested he do it, I think he's having a good time. He's good at teaching the boys to enjoy it and work as a team. There is one kid who doesn't come to practice, just shows up at the games and tries to hog the ball the whole time, irritates the crap out of me, but Nate's dealt with that really well. I'm just really proud of him! Of all my boys!! I get excited for the next sport! 1-25-14
SLEEPOVER AT HEIDI'S
Charity, Kelly and Erika got to sleepover at Heidi's on Saturday night. They had such a great time!! I couldn't believe the anticipation as it was building up for this!! Even little Erika! She was SO THRILLED!! They did so much, I'll have to have one of them write about it. But they did have a great time. They went to the mall and picked out clip on earrings. Kelly tried to talk Heidi into letting her get her ears pierced right then and there, but luckily they decided to wait for me! They had a dance party, pizza, just lots of fun! It was a bummer that it had to end so abruptly on Sunday morning. We had fun having Heidi and John at church with us though. Such a fun weekend. 1-26-14
MOVIE FIELD TRIP WITH BRADLEY
Bradley and I were able to spend part of his day together on his movie field trip! We went to the Centerville movie theater and watched a movie about Sea Life. It was a really cool movie! I was glad I got to be with him. I think the favorite part was when he saw all his friends from Holbrook there. He was like a celebrity, sitting up near the front, we would look to the back of the theater and the whole back row was standing up screaming Bradley's name and waving!! So fun! The fun thing about moving away from friends I guess. It's sad to see everyone though and wish you were that popular in your new school. And it just can't be. Kind of a bummer. But we did see Sam Sebring and got his number and stuff, so maybe we can have a hang out. Bradley was on a cloud :). I loved it. 1-28-14
SEP CONFERENCES
I was dreading SEPs this time for some reason. Probably all the missing work. But our kids' teachers didn't seem too bothered by it. We heard nothing but good things about all the kids!! They all had rave reviews! I'm really grateful for the teachers we have this year and grateful that my kids are still really well-behaved and making an effort at school. It's a relief. I love knowing that they are contributing to the good of the class. Makes me proud. We went out to Brick Oven with their little coupons to celebrate and they even let us use them all even though it was supposed to be one for one (adult/kid meals). Cool place! 1-30-14
THE APPENDIX
Friday around 2:00 in the morning, I woke up with some pretty extreme pain in my stomach. Felt a lot like gas. So I laid there, did what I know how to do to relieve myself of gas, and nothing happened. The pain kept getting worse and wasn't going away with anything I tried. Warm bath, walking around, relaxing, I read for a couple hours, but mostly just tossed and turned on the bed and the couch, the floor, anywhere I could... it was miserable!! I started worrying about it and wondering what it was when the pain moved down to my lower right quadrant. I know this is where the appendix is. This is the go to worry for me though, I always think I have appendicitis, and actually as kind of a joke, so I tried not to think it was that. But it kept coming up in all of my searches of symptoms. Finally I threw up. I had been praying to throw up because I thought it might relieve some of the pain, thinking maybe I had had food poisoning or something. And since we'd eaten so late, I thought it was the food. But when I threw up, there was hardly anything there. A few pieces of carrot from the salad I had eaten but the salad came before the calzone on the menu, so there should have been more in the vomit. This made me worry. Then the next time I threw up, it was just mucous. So that ruled out food poisoning for me. This looked more like ovarian cyst, tubal pregnancy, or appendicitis to me. It was so painful. I never did sleep. I tried to get up and help the kids get ready, but luckily Nate had called in to work and was there to really help them. I just cried most of the morning. I knew I needed to be seen. This was not going to go away on its own and not quick enough for me. So Nate called a doctor and made me an appointment.
Luckily Becky was available to tend, we dropped the kids off and went to the doctor. The whole time I started questioning how sick I really was. Was it really bad enough to go to the doctor?? Yes!!! But I still second guess myself. So we saw Dr. Burningham for the first time, nice doctor. He said it looked like appendicitis, but that there was a possibility it was something else, so he figured the ER was the way to go. To get things done in a timely fashion. He gave me a couple shots, one with Toradol for pain and then Phenergan for nausea. I wasn't sure about that, I hate shots in my bumb, but later was SO grateful for those!! So we went over to Davis Hospital, just across the street. The ER people were very nice. Took quick care of me. The doctor was strange, but he did what he could. They tested my blood, found lots of wbc's. My count was 17,000. He was thinking appendicitis because the pregnancy test had been negative he decided a CT scan could narrow it down even more. So off we went to that. That wasn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I just laid there. The CT scan showed that it was in fact appendicitis. He scheduled surgery for that night at 6:30. They sent us up to the surgery floor and there we waited the rest of the day. Making calls all day to arrange things for the kids. Charity and Kelly had activity days. Then Grandma wanted to help, so she brought them home. Luckily Heidi was off and was able to come stay with them overnight. That was a huge blessing. They gave me some morphine once the shot wore off and that was not as helpful. I was in a lot of pain for most of the afternoon. Our Bishop and his wife came during one of the really tough times, so that was nice, I was able to get my mind off it. They were so sweet to come and see us. I appreciated phone calls from several people in the ward, and texts, everyone offering to help and take care of the kids. It was awesome. Feels good to be part of such a great ward. I was very grateful. The Bishop helped Nate give me a blessing. We went in for surgery around 8:00 they were a little late. I was in so much pain, I don't remember a lot of it. Then when I came out of it, I was so frustrated with how long it took to come out, everyone was just a big blur of me being mad at people. It was weird. Nate took good care of me.. Not sure what I would have done without him there. They might have hung me.
The night was crappy. I was hooked up to so many machines and they all kept beeping all night that I didn't sleep at all. They were crappy nurses, didn't give me the pain meds when I needed them and without water or food... that was annoying. So we were pretty anxious to go home. When they came in and said the Doctor had said we could go home anytime, we were set! We were out of there by 7:30. That was good. I sat and talked with Heidi most of the day. She helped with the kids while Nate took some of the kids to the basketball pictures and game. I was bummed I missed it, they won!! Then we all just took it easy the rest of the evening. I think I slept while the kids and Nate cleaned up the house. That was nice.
The next day was Sunday. I was feeling mostly good- just dizzy from the drugs, so I went to church. Everyone thought I was crazy. I felt a little sick toward the end, I was ready to come home. Heidi came over after church and made dinner for us. It was a crazy CRAZY weekend, but now I don't have my appendix anymore, and so I will not have to worry about that ever happening again :)!! 1-31-14
